Block Grants are Bad for Kids

October 2012 – Since 1965, Medicaid has provided America’s children a crucial safety net. As the nation’s single-largest health insurance provider for children, Medicaid nances care for one in three children, two in three low-income children, and four in ten of the nation’s births. As part of their response to reduce government spending, Congressional Republican leadership has proposed a deficit-reduction plan that would cap federal Medicaid spending and transform it into a block grant program. This plan would represent a fundamental transformation of how Medicaid operates.
